Sunshine in Nosy Komba

The HE Space Children's Foundation (HESCF) has a long-standing co-operation with Sunshine in Nosy Komba. As well as supporting teacher training, HESCF's support of a project called Rise & Shine enables top-performing students from the island school to attend further education on the mainland of Madagascar. High quality education is the only sustainable way of giving hope and options for the future to these children, and consequently to the local community.

Since the project start in 2015, many students have managed to get to university following this initiative. Last year was again successful. In total, for the year 2023-24, including the university students, 59 students benefitted from the Rise and Shine scholarship programme.

In the 2024-2025 academic year things looked even better. A total of 68 students (34 in high school and 34 already at university) were supported via this programme with a further 18 students on the waiting list who receive a subsidy on their monthly school fees.

The photos below of the scholarship award ceremony tell their own story. The impact of the scholarship support extends beyond the young person themselves. It inspires the younger children and empowers the whole community.
